"Last Step" is the film I made to finish the Unreal Fellowship for Virtual Production program. This fellowship was put in motion by Epic Games to familiarize and spread the use of Unreal Engine in Virtual Production so every participant was already established in the film and tv industry with various backgrounds. We have been learning Unreal 4.25 for the last month and implementing what we learned to our projects. Everybody had a different take on their project and it was amazing sharing my time with all of them. I decided to create a film that was a long due continuation of my university grad project from 2003. I already had the asset and design for the ship but it was really basic and had a weird topology all over. I had to remodel it and add as much detail as I possibly could with some areas still subpar but I am a rusty modeler and I had a limited time so I had to compromise. The highlight for me was the landing gears and creating and implementing the blend shapes for the final landing sequence with the help of Brian Pohl from the Unreal team. After seeing the final landing shot in the edit I was really happy where this film was going. Another shot that came out incredible was the moment Echo broke the fourth wall.. The people at Unreal did an incredible job creating her. The amount of detail that was put in her and the control you have on her rig was mind blowing. And I thought this was just a "game engine"... While exploring her rig I came across several control points that no one told us that they were there. One was the pupil scale parameter in her eye material. And the other was the glowing tattoo on her shoulder I noticed while watching the Unreal 5 reveal event one late night. After a brief search I found the texture that was used but we had to implement it inside her materials. It was great sharing these with other fellows and see how everyone else played around with these parameters. With the talent of Mustafa Durma at 1000Volt, creating the final mix on top of Scott Buckley's music "Titan" really carried the visuals forward.
